At the most recent Upfest, some amazing murals were erected! Amongst all the visual violence, works still stood out, like the ones from Martin Ron. Martin Ron is an amazing muralist hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He's been responsible for some amazing murals all across the globe. This introduction doesn't do him justice, so without further ado I present you with the words and works of Martin Ron!
"I try to make sure that my work this influenced by the environment and the local people because they are the ones that will enjoy my paintings every day."
Hi Martin, for our readers who do not know you, could you introduce yourself a bit?
I am a muralist from Buenos Aires, Argentina and I’ve painting on the streets for more than 12 years now, often alone and sometimes with many people on huge projects. I also take part in a lot of international festivals and I’m always looking for places to paint, people to meet and having fun with friends.
(How) does your Argentina heritage influence your painting?
My country is characterized by good weather and lots of sightseeing. There’s also a great mix of foreign and indigenous culture which makes it really special for interesting artistic pursuits and for those eager to learn, the chance to incorporate that knowledge to painting – it’s one of best ways to appreciate and understand the world and its mysteries.
How important is the site / location for your work?
The site and the location is the most important.... It determines the concept and composition of my creations. I try to make sure that my work this influenced by the environment and the local people because they are the ones that will enjoy my paintings every day. The wall's own characteristics also interest and inspire my work.
You have worked around the world, do you have any favourite places to paint?
I love London, especially Shoreditch! It’s a place with many people and where many colleagues and artists visit every summer. But undoubtedly South America is the best place to paint because of the freedom we have there and above all things the good climate. The best thing though is the people, they are very friendly and welcome new ideas.
What can we expect from Ron Martin in the future?
In the future I hope to bring a lot more paint to cities all over the world. It always motivates me to paint and change themes and techniques. Painting is something that will accompany me throughout life and I like to experiment and look back on how my painting have changed over time – it makes it more fun.
