Baloji ft. Konono Nº1 – Karibu Ya Bintou

Baloji ft. Konono Nº1 – Karibu Ya Bintou

By Kaymir Stark

Yesterday, Arden and myself were thinking about our ‘music department’ – Crackforyourears.  Before revamping the website, it had been offline for over an year. Our focus had always been on electronic music, at least that is what we thought. But looking back it actually was never like that. True, we posted loads of electronic based stuff. But that was probably a result of our main approach to everything concerning CFYE. We’re always on the look out for “0800-CRAZY”. That little door inside someone head that opens up now and then to let it all out.

What is that then? I am not talking about some “neo-hedonism anarchistic fuck the world let’s party all day” spirits. But those photographers who travel Mexico on top of a fright train, calls a huge garbage mountain his home for a week or no matter the weather stays out to shoot apocalyptic images from airplanes. Our beloved street artists who travel the world to paint pink unicorns, breaking glass windows and jizz all over girls and can call it art! I consider us two dysfunctional guys with a huge interest in works like that and the urge to share them with the world. Over the years we surround us with like minded people that for that same reason want to cooperate in this pink project.

So that brings me back to the music side of things. If fascinating craziness is the criteria then I am the resident DJ of the local mental ward. With pleasure ( a gentle smile with crazy eyes) I bring you Congo’s word sorcerer Baloji!  He addresses all sorts of black magic mysticism in this clip for “Karibu Ya Bintou” (“Welcome To Life In Limbo”). He’s joined on the track by the junkyard electronic sounds of Konono Nº1. The Kinshasa-streets video features plenty skull masks, open-trunk hopping, and local pro-wrestling.
